Israel has assassinated Ali Larijani, one of the Iranian regime’s top figures. In doing so, it has taken out a man who some people thought might be able to negotiate an end to the war. The regime is weakened. But now it may be seized by men even more hard-line than Mr Larijani, and willing to fight on come what may.

And Britons now support rejoining the EU by 52% to 29%. That may be why Rachel Reeves, Britain’s chancellor, has “fired the starting gun” for closer realignment with Europe. The tone has shifted. Has the policy? European leaders are still waiting for concrete proposals that would prove it.
