The Grand Canyon I never got to see
A devastating wildfire forever changed the rare beauty of the secluded North Rim.

Kevin Fedarko had devoted years of his life as a river guide and backpacker to exploring some of the deepest reaches of the Grand Canyon. But during that time, he writes in his magazine feature, he’d “shortchanged the wonders of the North Rim country.” When he set off to explore it last June, he found himself pulled away from his destination by a storied grove of aspens along the way. “I could come back whenever I wanted. The North Rim would always be there,” he had told himself.

Then a devastating fire incinerated not only the landscape but also its fabled lodge — the “Notre Dame” of the national parks, where visitors could gaze at the majestic vista spread out before them. After being given rare permission to enter the area in winter, Fedarko decided to finally take his journey.

In his story, he writes about what he found at the North Rim after the blaze: “In addition to being a catastrophe, what unfolded here is also an antecedent to a renaissance.”
