My contribution to CFR’s “A Year After ‘Liberation Day’” review looks at who has borne the incidence of Trump’s tariffs over time, as well as the contribution of those tariffs to inflation. Given the public’s continued angst over affordability, and growing association of tariffs with affordability, I expect tariff exemptions on popular consumer goods and their raw-material inputs to increase as we get closer to the midterm elections.
