As an economics major and baseball coach, this is something that is near and dear to my heart.
Averages hide the truth.
In baseball, a player could have a .400 batting average over 10 games. That would look, amazing.
But what if he had all of his hits in just 2 of the games (each blowouts against poor opponents) and was hitless in the other 8?
In business, what if the average earnings across all products look good, but they're carried by one or two big winners? Prioritizing the winners and looking beyond the averages is so important and understated.
