"Press freedom is under threat" and it's happening faster and in more places, AP Executive Editor Julie Pace said at the Press Freedom Week kickoff panel earlier today.
It's a dire situation, said Jodie Ginsberg, CEO of the Committee to Protect Journalists, citing the deadliest documented year for reporters and rising distrust in facts. |
"What's happening in the U.S. is exactly what we've seen in other deteriorating democracies worldwide," she said. "The difference is that it's happening here at warp speed." |
Ginsberg put it simply: Spend money. Speak out. Stand up.
Los Angeles Times Executive Editor Terry Tang emphasized the importance of supporting news organizations that adhere to core reporting principles like confirming facts, using multiple sources and holding institutions accountable. "That is the foundation of American journalism," she said.
