| TOP OF THE AGENDA | | Shooting scenes painfully familiar | | | | | Speaking to CBS' 60 Minutes, Trump blamed Democrats for creating an atmosphere that encouraged the shooting. Credit: Reuters | | For several attendees, the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday night would not have been their first experience of political violence. Some have experienced it first-hand. Others have lost loved ones to it. The suspected gunman was charged with the attempted assassination of the US president; it's the third time in two years Trump has been a target. "These incidents have become frequent enough that there is almost a routine to them," writes Anthony Zurcher, who notes "that cycle is in overdrive this week". After the familiar calls for unity and a cooling of political rhetoric, Anthony writes, Trump began pushing for the removal of obstacles to build a massive ballroom at the White House. The president, in a social media post, said the shooting was “exactly the reason” he wants said ballroom. | | | | | | | | |
