Students and families participating in Strategies Lab/Library Open House

Kings Park Families,

Many of our students engaged in meaningful learning beyond the classroom this past week. Last Friday, our second graders visited the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, where they made strong connections to their social studies learning. This Monday and Tuesday, our first graders demonstrated their understanding of scientific practices at Huntley Meadows. We are grateful that our students have opportunities for hands-on learning experiences that deepen understanding and bring classroom learning to life during field trips.

There are several opportunities this week for families to engage in learning alongside their students. The STEAM/Strategies Lab and Library Open Houses offer a window into the engaging experiences students have each week during these specials each week, and tomorrow’s Meet Me at the Library event provides a chance for families to create and enjoy music together. While we recognize that schedules may not allow for families to attend every family engagement event, we are committed to offering a variety of opportunities throughout the year for families to learn and spend meaningful time together.

Kings Park Admin Team

Sincerely,

Mrs. Dotty Lin, Mrs. Jenn Burke and Mrs. Anna Kaplan

April 28th Attendance Check-In: K-3

KP's 2025-2026 Attendance Goal: 7% chronic absenteeism or less

Percentage of students NOT currently chronically absent 92.8%
Percentage of students currently chronically absent (missed 10% or more of the school days so far this year) 7.2%

Due by Monday - Family Input for Class Placements 2026-2027

As we begin to plan for the 2026-2027 school year, we are inviting your input. Creating class assignments requires careful consideration and the involvement of many perspectives. We know a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success. Should you have additional information about your specific child that school staff may not know, particularly regarding learning style and classroom environment; we ask that you please complete the Family Input Form no later than Monday, May 4th, 2026. If you have more than one child attending KPES, please complete one form per child.

We ask that you do not request specific teachers or friendship pairings and keep the information shared about your child and the type of learning environment you feel would be the most productive for him/her/them. We assure you that with or without a form, each child’s strengths and needs are considered. As in the past, families will receive class placement notification just prior to school starting.

STEAM/Strategies Lab and Library Open House THIS WEEK: April 27th - May 1st

Parents are invited to attend our upcoming STEAM/Strategies Lab and Library Open Houses, taking place this week, April 27th – May 1st. Parents and guardians are welcome to stop by and explore the exciting learning happening in our STEAM spaces and library. More details have been shared through Talking Points messages from Mrs. Mucciolo, Mrs. Crabill or Mrs. Woll.

Meet Me at the Library TOMORROW - April 29th

Join us for an evening of musical fun at the Kings Park Public Library (9000 Burke Lake Road) tomorrow, April 29th, from 5:00-6:00 PM.  Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Cunningham will be leading our event filled with rhythms, creativity, and literacy. We are partnering with WETA and all students attending will receive a book to take home. Come join some KPES staff for this hour-long event and don’t forget your dancing shoes. Hope to see you there!

Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day - May 6th

Get ready for Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, May 6th! Walking and biking to school benefits both the students and the community in several ways. Students who walk and bike get more physical activity, have more time to socialize with their friends, and develop a sense of independence and self-reliance. The community benefits from reduced pollution and traffic congestion. We encourage participants to plan a safe route in advance.

A fun way to celebrate this day is to form a “walking train” with other Kings Park friends! Meet at the bike racks (to the left of main entrance) at 8:20am to celebrate! Bus transportation will still be available and will follow the same route schedules. Kiss and Ride will still be available.

3-Hour Early Release Wednesday - May 13th (Grades K-3)

Kings Park’s last 3-hour Early Release Wednesday of the school year is Wednesday, March 13th, for students in grades K-3. Dismissal plans on record will be sent via TalkingPoints early next week. Changes to dismissal plans must be received by Monday, May 11th. Preschool follows a normal schedule that day.

Sue Fliess Author Visit - May 28th

We are excited to announce author Sue Fliess will be visiting Kings Park on Thursday, May 28th! Sue has written dozens of children’s books and will come share her expertise on being an author, getting ideas, and researching for stories. We are working with independent bookstore, Scrawl Books, to offer books for sale and signing for Sue’s Author visit. Please order books online by May 19th, at https://www.scrawlbooks.com/author-pages/sue-fliess. Select your books, go to the cart, then select school delivery as your delivery option. Choose Kings Park Elementary from the dropdown menu, and indicate your student’s name and teacher’s last name, then provide a first-name personalization if desired for book signing. Please contact Hannah Woll with any questions.
