Should You Pursue Fractional Work?

Even senior leaders are feeling less secure in their roles as uncertainty grows. One option to explore is fractional work—taking on part-time leadership roles across multiple organizations. Ask yourself five questions to decide whether it's right for you.

Do I enjoy hands-on work? You’ll need to be highly operational. These roles often require you to execute, adapt quickly, and manage multiple responsibilities with limited support. If you prefer a more narrow focus or to avoid implementation, consider whether this aligns with how you like to work.

Where will I find clients? You must build a consistent pipeline. Choose an approach that fits your strengths—whether it’s networking, outreach, platforms, or referrals—and improve it over time. Reliable client flow is critical to making this model work.

Do I need to set up my own business? Start with what’s essential. Define your pricing, contracts, and financial setup so you can begin working. Expand your infrastructure gradually instead of delaying your launch.

How well do my clients fit together? Treat your work as a portfolio. Assess each opportunity for time demands, work style, and alignment with your goals. Make sure your commitments are manageable and mutually compatible.

Can I sustain my fractional career? Protect your capacity. Set boundaries early, build buffers into your schedule and pricing, and adjust when work expands. You are responsible for maintaining a workload you can sustain long term.
