Kicking off

FOXBOROUGH - Between free agency and the recently completed NFL draft, the Patriots managed to plug some holes, and fortify some positions.

While some worry spots remain, the roster is in fairly decent shape at this stage.

It'll be even better with the expected arrival of A.J. Brown.

A lot is riding on that deal happening. The Patriots ignored the receiver position in the draft.

If the expected doesn't happen, and Brown doesn't wind up in New England, it wouldn't be a good look for the team.

Outfitting Drake Maye with a better receiving corps, and offensive line, was a top offseason priority.

Moves were made in both the draft and free agency to fix the line. As for receiver, after releasing Stefon Diggs, the Patriots signed free agent Romeo Doubs.

At best, that's a flat. No loss. No gain. Doubs is younger, and has potential to improve, but he's never had a 1,000-yard season.

Adding Brown is key to making the wide receiver group better and taking full advantage of Maye's skill set.

It's also the key to the Patriots having a successful offseason coming off their Super Bowl loss to Seattle.

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2023

The news: At this time three years ago, the Patriots were once again trying to right the ship, build through the draft, make better and more impactful choices.

They needed to add some A-list, blue chip talent. They were in desperate need of dyanmic playmakers on offense and defense.

In this particular draft in the first round, the Patriots traded down the board in the first round. They went from No. 14 moving three spots to No. 17.

They selected Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who has evolved into one of the best corners in the game. This week, the Patriots kicked in his fifth-year option with hopes of extending him further.

It's interesting that Seattle's Jaxon Smith-Njigba was still on the board. Instead of a game-changing receiver, they went with the shutdown corner. And while the Patriots lost to the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, Gonzo kept Smith-Njigba well in check.

This year, they moved up the board to get offensive tackle Caleb Lomu. We'll see how that turns out.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Who do you like from this Patriots draft class? Who is your favorite? Matt from Sharon.

Guregian: I'd have to go with second-round pick Gabe Jacas from Illinois. All of the draft experts descriptions of him were colorful. "Play-through-your-face type of guy." That was an NFC scout. And this is from The Athletic's Dane Brugler: "Jacas is a quick and violent pass rusher who doesn't need a long runway."

He forced six fumbles the past two years. He's relentless and a high energy, high motor guy. For what the Patriots are looking for, it's hard not to love the fit.
