The best things we bought in April

We’ll spare you existential musings on the changing of seasons and just say that April kept us busy. We tested thousands of dollars’ worth of gold and gems in our quest to find the best places to buy jewelry online. We also rolled out our brand-new guide to makeup for mature skin, including primers, mascaras, and lip products galore.

For all the Costco fans out there, our style expert tried all the womenswear from Kirkland Signature — and found surprisingly great jeans. And she reminded us that, yes, we should be wearing shoes inside. (It’s actually better for your feet.)

As your newsletters editors, we took notes, and a few useful things landed in our carts. Below is a roundup of just a few of the Wirecutter-approved picks we’ve been loving lately.

I make stir-fry basically every other day, but I put off getting a wok for years because I couldn’t justify the amount of cabinet space it would take up in my small apartment. I finally caved last month and got our top-pick wok, and it’s been a total game changer. The wok doesn’t come pre-seasoned, but I was surprised by how simple and easy the process was. And the same dish that once took me 30 minutes was finished in just 15 — the tofu crispy and the veggies perfectly cooked.

I am an every-night-no-matter-what sleep masker, so I’m unsure why it took me so long to splurge on this silky, bug-like one. It’s arriving today, and I am fairly convinced it’s going to change my life. My colleague Maxine Builder promises that the two eyecups will fully block out even the brightest New York streetlights and stay put during the night (thanks to the sturdy Velcro strap), all without squishing my eyes or lashes — solving the biggest issues I’ve had with other sleep masks. Zzzzzz.

Last month, I restocked my third (!) bottle of my holy-grail moisturizer, which excels at making my skin feel soft and quenched, even through this weird transitional season we currently find ourselves in. Its gentle, no-frills, silky formula keeps my skin barrier strong and my flare-ups quelled — so much so, that I’d happily pay much more for it. But no need, because it is $14 and available at my local CVS.

I’ve run the gamut of skin-care products — and unfortunately have pretty low expectations whenever I buy new ones. As such, when I bought our recommended retinoid for acne-prone skin, I did so with mild-to-medium skepticism. It’s now been a couple weeks, and, while I won’t call it a miracle worker (I do still break out from time to time), my zits are healing much faster and my skin tone looks noticeably more even.

I’ll be honest, I’d originally purchased this body lotion for its funky pink packaging. But it has since become a mainstay of my moisturizing routine. Instead of automatically reaching for Vaseline post-shower, I’ve been gravitating toward this body lotion’s lightweight, creamy feel and blessedly quick dry time. It leaves my sensitive skin feeling soft and supple, and applying it before bed feels like a soothing treat.
