Once Senator, now candidate for Alabama Governor, Doug Jones is the quintessential public servant. I know this firsthand—I’ve known Doug for decades, and watched him raise his daughter as a single dad until he met and married the love of his life, Louise. It’s reassuring to me when our elected officials are real people, just like us. When they’ve faced the same struggles, share the same concerns, and take real joy in life—Doug collects autographed baseballs, loves the sport, and we’ve debated the merits of who makes the best BBQ in Alabama a time or two. So it was important to me to have a chance to talk with him in the wake of the gerrymandering case, Callais, which we discussed here after the Supreme Court handed it down on Wednesday. Trying to make sense of moments like this is something Doug is exceptionally good at, he’s principled but pragmatic and I’m looking forward to his take on the race to the bottom we’re seeing as Louisiana tries to suspend a primary where ballots had already been cast and Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and others talk about last minute changes to electoral maps with an openly partisan goal—the Supreme Court has said this is okay—of gerrymandering Democrats out of participation in the House and other political bodies and offices that are elected by district rather than statewide. Mark your calendars to join Doug and me at 2:30 pm ET/1:30 Central for our live conversation. There will be video available later in the day if you have to miss us.
