Meta is making Instagram DMs unsafe – what can you do about it?
Dear friend,
Meta is changing something important on Instagram from May 8 and it will affect hundreds of millions of people. We think it’s important you know about it.
From May 8, Meta is stopping end-to-end encryption on Instagram direct messages. If you use DMs to stay connected to friends and loved ones, this matters for you. Without encryption, your messages are no longer secure. They no longer stay between just you and the person you messaged - Meta could also take a peek.
Encryption is crucial for our daily communication, to organise in communities, for journalists to hold power to account, for people to access sensitive healthcare, and for free and democratic societies to continue existing.
This is why we are calling on EU lawmakers to safeguard our ability to communicate without intrusion by protecting encryption and banning spyware. You can join us, and thousands of other people, by signing our petition.
