NOAA Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries seeks advisory council applicants

Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries are seeking applicants for open seats on their respective Sanctuary Advisory Councils. The councils ensure public participation in sanctuary management and provide advice to the sanctuary superintendent.

 Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary is accepting applications for the following seats: 

  • Community at Large - San Francisco/San Mateo (primary and alternate)
  • Community-at-Large Marin (primary and alternate)
  • Community at Large - Mendocino/Sonoma (alternate)
  • Conservation (primary and alternate)
  • Maritime Commercial Activities (primary)
  • Maritime Recreational Activities (primary and alternate)
  • Commercial Fishing (primary and alternate)
  • Research (primary and alternate)

Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is accepting applications for the following seats: 

  • Community-at-Large - Sonoma Seat  (2 positions available)
  • Conservation Seat  
  • Fishing Seat 
  • Maritime Activities Seat 

The application period opens on May 11, 2026. Completed applications are due by June 5, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Applications received or postmarked after June 5, 2026 will not be considered.  Selected applicants should expect to serve a three-year term. Advisory council members also serve as liaisons to their represented communities. Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary’s Advisory Council is composed of 10 non-governmental, voluntary members representing commercial fishing, conservation, education, maritime activities, research, youth, and the community-at-large. The advisory council also includes governmental seats representing the California Natural Resources Agency, Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, NOAA Fisheries, National Park Service, United States Coast Guard, and United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary’s Advisory Council is composed of 14 non-government, voluntary members representing research, conservation, maritime activities, fishing, education, and the community at-large. The advisory council also includes governmental seats representing NOAA Fisheries, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and the United States Coast Guard. Both sanctuaries actively recruit new members when positions are available. The council meets quarterly, with special meetings as needed.

Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary encompasses 3,295 square miles of marine waters off the northern and central California coast. It supports an abundance of life, including many threatened and endangered species. The offshore 1,286 square mile Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary protects soft seafloor habitat, a rocky bank, deep sea canyons, and bountiful communities of wildlife.
