| | | | | Good morning. This week is National Police Week, and today, we have two former Chicago police officers with an important message to impart: The stress that law enforcement officers face daily puts them at serious risk of a deterioration in well-being. The rate of suicide among officers throws that risk into sharp relief. In their op-ed, these nonprofit co-founders make
an impassioned argument for getting officers the mental health support they need. Speaking of making a strong case, the Tribune Editorial Board lays out its reasons for the Democratic National Convention to return to Chicago. And in its other editorial, the board shakes its collective head at the Chicago Board of Education’s taxpayer-funded investigation into how reporters who cover Chicago Public Schools manage to break news. Spoiler alert: The probe didn’t turn up anything. Shame on President Sean Harden, the board writes. Also in commentary, foreign affairs columnist Daniel DePetris reports that trouble is brewing at home for Russian President Vladimir Putin over his costly war in Ukraine, and veteran columnist Clarence Page considers the reasons young couples are hesitating starting a family. Unsurprisingly, dread over the state of the world has something to do with it. In our letters, two commenters focus on an issue that unfortunately never loses relevance: the high cost of utility bills. We’ll be back with more passionate opinions tomorrow. — Colleen Kujawa, opinion editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter | | | | We must make it easier for police officers to reach someone who understands the job before the weight of their work becomes unmanageable. | | | | | Chicago earned a second consecutive shot at the DNC. | | | | | An exercise in folly by Chicago School Board President Sean Harden. | | | | | The discontent in Russian society over the costly war in Ukraine is beginning to bubble up. | | | | | When asked about a delay in having kids, many young couples cite economic and job uncertainties.
