| Good morning. The news on the inflation front has all been bad as of late. One of the key contributors to the affordability challenges plaguing so many of us is the rising cost of housing. The Opinion section has two op-eds extolling Gov. JB Pritzker's BUILD plan, which would wrest some of municipalities' zoning authority and allow for the construction by right, say, of four-flats in most single-family housing zones. One is by former Northwestern University President Michael Schill, who has studied housing markets for decades. The other is by four mayors who, unlike most of their peers, support Pritzker's initiative. A separate piece by Alexander Heffner, host of the
"The Open Mind" on PBS, discusses the threat AI poses to many current jobholders and how even tech billionaires acknowledge the need in the future for some sort of universal basic income. The editorial board returns to the issue of the school-choice program created by last year's GOP tax law and how New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's recent signaling that she will support opting into that program could help Pritzker ultimately do the same. And for all you suburban commuters, the edit board feels your pain. A recent report labeled Naperville as part of the nation's "burnout belt." Readers' letters today also focus on the affordability issue. Check those out, and we'll talk to you tomorrow. — Steve Daniels, editorial board member Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter |
