Focus on Frederick Law Olmsted in May

It's finally springtime and warm enough to enjoy the parks and greenspaces where you live! To celebrate, we are focusing on the Frederick Law Olmsted campaign in May. Who was Olmsted? He is credited with founding the field of American landscape architecture, known best for designing Central Park, the grounds of the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, the US Capitol Grounds, and numerous parks in cities and towns all over the country. The two projects we will be working in contain Olmsted's notes and drafts for his many articles and speeches, and diaries and journals kept by the broader Olmsted family

Interested in transcribing? Start with Olmsted's Speeches and Writings. There are 1,600 pages that still need a first pass of transcription. Love to review? Help finish up the Olmsted Family Journals. There are 147 pages in progress that need a little help to get over the finish line.

Join a By the People webinar to celebrate America's 250th birthday on June 4!

Commemorate the 250th birthday of the United States through service! Join us for a webinar on Thursday, June 4, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM EDT to learn about our The American Revolution In Context transcription projects. Registration is required for the virtual event.

This event will share how you can dive into our shared history by transcribing the text of 18th-century diaries, letters, cookbooks, pamphlets, sheet music, and maps from across Library of Congress collections. These campaigns included in The American Revolution In Context project provide context for understanding colonial America through the Revolution to the early Republic. Webinar attendees will learn about the collections included, the impact of By the People volunteer transcriptions, and how to get involved as a volunteer or host of a transcription event.
