Today we’re sharing our favorite things we bought this month. Plus:
As newsletters coordinator Allyson Waller said in our team’s Slack channel this week, “May literally felt like 3-5 business days.” She’s right. This month has flown by. What’s the saying? That’s what happens when you’re having fun? We will admit, we did have fun — especially in our quests to find the best hot dogs, pickles, and ice cream sandwiches. On the other side of the whimsy spectrum, we made the case for passkeys — and explained why that extended warranty is almost never worth the money. Per usual, we were taking notes, and a few useful (and fun!) things landed in our carts. Below: The Wirecutter-approved picks we’ve been loving lately.
If I could only paint my nails one color for the rest of my life, it’d be this: Essie’s Ballet Slippers. This month, I restocked yet again. The color is the perfect, milky baby pink. Its slightly sheer finish is very forgivable for beginners who might paint outside of the lines. And? Nary a chip in sight for weeks with a top coat. This nail polish has truly never failed me.
I’m going to stick my neck out and say that chocolate belongs nowhere near summer desserts. (Except, I suppose, in the form of sprinkles scattered atop a swirl of soft serve.) Here’s my perfect warm weather treat: a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream, freshly-washed berries, and crumbled graham crackers. Life felt a little more glorious knowing I had a pint waiting for me at the end of May’s warmest days. I love our pick for a “sophisticated” vanilla ice cream (because that’s just the kind of person I am), but I think any of our favorites would deliver on this simple deliciousness.
This month I set out with a very specific goal in mind: Reduce the amount of times I say “Huh? What did they just say?” while watching movies and TV shows at home. After acquainting myself with the expert advice in our guide to the best soundbar, the solution was clear. Our upgrade pick has completely transformed my listening experience — the speakers create the closest thing to an immersive sound environment that I’ve ever experienced in the comfort of my own home. We’re even considering abandoning our status as a Subtitles Household. I refuse to speak ill of my beloved neighborhood coffee shop, but lately the lids on my iced coffee have been … a bit more slippery than usual. After a month of watching espresso dribble down my clothes, it was finally time to listen to laundry expert Andrea Barnes and grab her all-time favorite spot cleaner. It’s a rare jack-of-all-trades — but it especially wows on fresh, color-intense stains like those from my iced Americanos. I pride myself in keeping a tidy space. So, when I spot a tiny gnat or fly in my home, it immediately disturbs the serenity and cleanliness I’ve worked to maintain. After one too many sightings for my liking, I decided I needed a better line of defense. Enter: a plug-in bug catcher. This trap has become the MVP of my indoor-insect woes. It lures in pests with its UV light and powerful adhesive pad. I set it up in my bathroom and living room, so the trap can work its magic without me having to lift a finger.
