The Weekender: Fro yo vs. ice cream, Spielberg on suspense and 5 great biking cities
Plus, “Love Island” meets “Dancing With the Stars” at the altar.

One of my favorite series here at The Times is “Anatomy of a Scene,” in which directors break down key moments from their films. This week, the one and only Steven Spielberg got in front of our camera to narrate an action scene from his new movie, “Disclosure Day,” and shared some of his techniques for building suspense. In this case, Spielberg revealed that the new sequence is a continuation, of sorts, of one he first filmed in 1971 for his feature-length-film debut, “Duel.” You can watch exactly how he did it below.

Also in this edition, find out what “trigger” actually means in psychology, play pretend wedding planner for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce and get 30 TV shows to add to your watch list this summer. I’ll see you next weekend(er).

RITE OF PASSAGE

Here are five proms from around the U.S. that tell the story of Prom Night 2026.

How has prom changed in America?

Priya Krishna, who wrote this story, joined readers in the comments to compare the prom experiences of today’s teenagers with their own.

I went to prom in 2009, back when most of my friends carried iPods and Instagram wasn't a thing yet. Reporting this story reminded me how much has changed for teenagers (they make so many TikTok dance videos now) but also how much has stayed the same (the backyard prom photos). Prom marks the end of high school for most, and I heard in these five people the same hope and wonder for the rest of their lives.

As someone with younger friends, I worried that their peers would be too engrossed in the Instagram-able photo opportunities. To my surprise, their phones stayed at the table with their purses while they lived it up on the dance floor. It's so wonderful to see kids these having the time of their lives, especially since many high school events of my own were ruined by the COVID lockdowns.
