University of Toronto professors Jon Hunter and Bob Maunder know a thing or two about coping with adversity. The psychiatrists and long-time friends have kept a standing appointment for 30 years in which they catch up and share whatever is on their minds. Now, they’re sharing their knowledge with the wider world with their new book,
Coping: Fix Problems, Find Meaning, Feel Better ,
which reads like a therapy session filled with the practical homework for people overwhelmed with problems they can’t fix.
The book covers the basics: get your sleep, eat well, etc. – but the duo notes that coping looks different for everyone (and that means for some, ditching the kale salad for a burger really works.) As the book says, “First, fix what you can, Second, do things to feel better about what you can’t fix. Finally, when all else fails, put your energy into things that matter.”
