The Eye on Foxborough Newsletter

June 19, 2026

(With the team off,  the Patriots Newsletter will be on hiatus for the next few weeks. It'll return on July 24th with Day 1 of training camp kicking  July 25th).

Kicking off

The Patriots have a tight end problem.

Their depth with Julian Hill out for the season?

Pretty much non-existent.

There’s Hunter Henry, and a collection of unproven players. Rookie Eli Raridon, the team's 2026 third round pick, needs some development before assuming the No. 2 role next to Henry.

Jack Westover is a tight end, who primarily played fullback last year, who is flipping back to his original position. C.J. Dippre and undrafted free agent Tanner Arkin are also in the mix.

If Henry were to get hurt, there’s no one in the tight end room who can come close to replicating his role. It’s one of the bigger concerns for the team coming out of minicamp.

Mike Vrabel even acknowledged the Patriots would likely have to make a move to shore up the position.

“I think just from a numbers standpoint in camp, I think that’s somewhere we’ll probably have to evaluate the numbers,” Vrabel said. “There’s 90 guys, 91 guys on every team. So, we’ll just have to take a look at that, but I would say that’s probably somewhere where we would have to address.”

Will Dissly, Pharaoh Brown and Nick Vannett are among the more established veterans currently available in free agency who fit the profile.

The Patriots could also swing a trade.

If they are so inclined, Michael Mayer of the Las Vegas Raiders comes to mind. He's fallen down the depth chart with Brock Bowers on board and is in a contract year.

In any case, this is one of the top storylines to monitor during the break leading up to training camp.

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year:  2012

The news: Following a minicamp 14 years ago, I remember writing about, no make that gushing, about Tom Brady's newest receiver.

Brandon Lloyd looked like a star in the early going. With Lloyd joining Deion Branch, Wes Welker, and Rob Gronkowski, it looked like he would help take the offense to another level.

In 2010, Lloyd had 77 catches for 1,448 yards with 11 touchdowns while in Denver. He did that with Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow at quarterback.

With Brady now throwing him passes, it was easy to project how much better he'd be.

Of course, there are now similar thoughts with A.J. Brown coming aboard, and catching passes from Drake Maye. It's hard not having visions of greatness after watching them in minicamp.

Lloyd, who signed a three-year, $12 million deal, was good. But he didn't satisfy those early expectations.

He caught 74 passes for 911 yards with four touchdowns. And, was one-and-done. He was released by the team in 2013.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Mike Vrabel backed his edge rushers, but do you think they still need help?

Guregian: Right now, I'm not buying into Vrabel's faith. I sort of get why he backed the position group, but it's hard especially with Harold Landry still not ready thanks to offseason knee surgery, Gabe Jakas (contract, procedure) missing the entire spring, and the depth unproven.

Outside of Dre'Mont Jones, the Patriots are relying on second-year players Elijah Ponder and Bradyn Swinson to pick up the slack. They did well in the early camps, but those were unpadded practices. I'll have a better idea once training camp rolls around and I get to see them go up against opposing players in joint practices against Indy and Philadephia.
