You should check the trail conditions before we go this weekend because the north loop might still be wet from last week's rain. I called the ranger station and they said the south ridge is in good shape though. Starting at 7am would let us avoid the crowds and we could have lunch at the summit. There is a shortcut via the old fire road but it is steeper. Let me know if you are bringing your dog so I can check the trail rules for pets. The parking lot tends to fill up by 8am so we should plan to meet early and carpool if possible. I can drive if you want since my car has more space for gear. We should also bring extra water because the forecast says it might be warm. I will pack some snacks for everyone.

I tested that sauce recipe with fresh Roma tomatoes instead of canned and it worked really well. Roasting them first with salt and olive oil gives a deeper flavor. I added a pinch of sugar to balance the acid and let it simmer for about three hours. The key is using good basil at the very end and letting it cook long enough. I served it over pappardelle and it was well received. If you make it, consider doubling the garlic since it mellows during cooking. Let me know how it turns out if you try it. I also think a splash of balsamic vinegar at the end might brighten it up even more.
