yeah I finally got around to reading that book you mentioned last month - the one about the marine biologist who documents coral reef behavior over a decade. honestly I wasn't sure at first because the pacing felt slow in the opening chapters but once she starts describing the nocturnal feeding patterns and the symbiotic relationships between the smaller fish it really pulls you in. I ended up finishing it in three nights which for me is pretty rare because I usually fall asleep after five pages. the chapter on bioluminescence was absolutely stunning - I had no idea how much communication was happening beneath the surface. anyway I was thinking you might want to borrow the copy I have since you lent me that hiking memoir last spring. just let me know and I can drop it off next time I'm near your place.

oh also the author has a newer release coming out next quarter focusing on deep-sea vents and the extremophile species that live near them. I already pre-ordered it because if it's anything like this one it'll be worth the read. let me know what you think if you end up picking it up.

hey thanks for asking about the raised bed project - it turned out better than I expected honestly. I built the frame using untreated cedar because I read that treated wood can leach chemicals into the soil over time and since I'm planning to grow vegetables I didn't want to take any risks. the dimensions are four feet by eight feet which gives me enough room for tomatoes peppers and a few herbs without feeling overcrowded. I also added a drip irrigation kit that connects directly to a timer on the spigot so I don't have to remember to water every morning. the whole setup took about a weekend to complete including the soil fill and compost mix. my neighbor saw me working on it and decided to build one of her own so now we have matching beds along the fence line which is pretty funny.

the only tricky part was leveling the ground because the yard has a slight slope but once I dug out the high side and added some gravel everything settled nicely. I'll send you a photo once the seedlings start coming up - right now it's just dirt and a few tiny sprouts but I'm hopeful.
