Dear School Certifying Official (SCO),
We have identified an issue affecting terminations submitted for terms beginning more than two weeks in the future. When these terminations are processed through automation, incorrect Post‑9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) debts for books and supplies, tuition and fees, or Yellow Ribbon payments may be generated, even though no payment was previously issued. As a result, debt letters may be sent in error to your school or the student.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is actively addressing this issue and expects a full resolution with our next major system update on August 8, 2026. Until then, if you must terminate a student for a future term beginning more than two weeks out, please include the following VBA remark to ensure manual review and prevent erroneous debt letters: “Correcting previously terminated enrollment. Notice in Student Status(s) to follow.”
The “Correcting previously terminated enrollment. Notice in Student Status(s) to follow” VBA standard remark is routinely used when a terminated enrollment needs to be updated. Please continue using this remark for these situations as necessary.
Impacted students have already been notified via email. VA is manually correcting their files to remove erroneous debt letter notifications and notifying students via email and postal mail when the issue has been resolved. No action is needed from you or your students to correct this issue.
Students do not need to call regarding this issue, however, if they have further questions about their benefits or need additional assistance, they can submit an Ask VA (AVA) inquiry or call 888-442-4551 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday.
We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this system error.
Respectfully,
Education Service
