TOP OF THE AGENDA | Trump confirms he asked Fifa to review Balogun ban |
|

Credit: Getty Images | With just hours to go until the US takes on Belgium for a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals, President Donald Trump has confirmed he asked Fifa to review the ban given to America's star striker, after he received a red card for a foul in the last match. Trump said "all" he did was ask the president of football's governing body, Gianni Infantino, for a review but "didn't tell him what to do". Infantino said he told Trump Fifa's judicial bodies are independent. On Sunday, Fifa announced it was suspending Folarin Balogun's automatic one-match exclusion for 12 months, meaning he's available to play in Monday's knockout, leading to widespread criticism. Only one other player in World Cup history has escaped such a suspension. Belgium's appeal has been dismissed. |

| 'I thought I was going to die' - girl, 12, on 32 hours trapped in earthquakes' rubble | | Karina (left) says it will take a while to recover - but her family will move on. | More than 3,000 people are confirmed to have died in Venezuela's twin earthquakes and tens of thousands of others are still missing, but amid the despair, stories of hope are emerging. Stories like Fabiana's. The 12-year-old spent 32 hours trapped after her apartment block collapsed, and video of her rescue and reunion with her mother, Karina, has gone viral. |

| | Outside, Karina saw half of her daughter's bed sticking out of the debris. "I was running from one end of the complex to the other screaming 'She's dead. My daughter is dead'. I didn't know what to do," Karina says.
Under the collapsed building everything had gone quiet for Fabiana who was trapped on all sides, with the ceiling almost touching her face. "I'm someone who gets very anxious and claustrophobic. But I don't know why, a strange calm came over me," she says. A little while later, a nurse who worked as a carer for her upstairs neighbours started calling out to see if anyone could hear her. Fabiana responded. "She told me to stay calm and that everything would be alright." |
