Learning English is an exciting journey, but at some point, most people hit the same wall. Progress slows down and it starts to feel like no matter how hard you study, your English stays in the same place. |
Usually, it comes down to one of a few things.
- You're relying on translation instead of thinking in English.
- You're stuck in a routine that hasn't challenged you in months.
- You simply don't know your current level, so you don't know what to focus on next.

That last one matters more than you might think. You can't move forward if you don't know where you're starting from. |
That's where the CEFR comes in, the framework used to measure English levels from beginner to proficient. |

Most of my students tell me they are working towards one of the three levels below. Let's look at how talking about your job changes as you move from one level to the next. |
You can hold a conversation about familiar topics, handle most everyday situations, like ordering food or asking for directions, and explain your opinion, even if it's not always perfect.
Example:
"I work in a hospital. My job is quite hard because I have to deal with a lot of people every day, but I like helping them."
You can discuss ideas with native speakers, follow technical conversations in your field and understand different points of view without losing the thread.
Example:
"I've been working in healthcare for five years now, and even though the job can be stressful, I find it rewarding to see patients recover."
You're fluent and articulate, able to unpack complex topics, pick up on cultural nuance and hold your own in professional discussions without hesitating.
Example:
"Working in healthcare has taught me that patience matters just as much as technical skill, especially when you're dealing with people at their most vulnerable."
