Notable

Graham Platner is out. Why was he ever in? “Why did those voters fall so hard for Platner, cling so tightly to him and so strenuously avoid the unfolding truth? I partly blame the elders (and, in some cases, the not-so-elders) of the Democratic Party — the gerontocrats and the lifers and the career politicians heading in that direction.”

— Frank Bruni, a contributing Opinion writer, in conversation with Bret Stephens, an Opinion columnist

The birthright panic. “Don’t think for a moment that the birthright citizenship ruling was any kind of tipping point. In fact, it was more or less business as usual. Darkness covers the right.”

Re: This Is One of the Hardest Jobs in America. Millions Are Doing It Alone.

It is the false and excessively venerated idea of rugged individualism in this country that keeps us from caring better for the poor, sick, elderly, children and strangers. Take responsibility for yourself, sure, of course, as well as you can, but it is a lie that everyone can succeed, thrive and care for themselves throughout life entirely from their own ability. Aging belies that — even if you have all the money to pay for all your needs, you still will likely need SOMEONE to care for you in your final days/years, and right now there are simply not enough of them.Favs, Pa.
