How it started: In 2022 Caterpillar announced that it was moving its headquarters from Illinois to Texas. The heavy-equipment maker was one of many firms departing a blue state with expensive and dysfunctional governance and heading to a sensibly governed, taxpayer-friendly jurisdiction. How it’s going: So far, so good. Nick Wooten reports in the Dallas Morning News: Industrial giant Caterpillar has started the multimillion-dollar expansion of its global headquarters in Irving, state records show. A filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation last week shows that Caterpillar plans to renovate an office property at 901 W. Walnut Hill Lane. The site is less than 3 miles from its current headquarters at The Towers at Williams Square and is meant to give the company more space as it grows in North Texas. official, Gov. Greg Abbott, stopped by a Cat manufacturing facility last week to celebrate the company’s expansion of job training. Caterpillar has also been expanding sales and profits, so it’s been a happy story all the way around. But unfortunately this classic new-hometown-company-makes-good-after-escaping-Illinois-politicians tale might not have quite the happy ending one would expect.
