Matt Damon is the obvious star of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, but when it comes to the ensemble cast around him, Himesh Patel plays the most substantial supporting character in the film. He is Eurylochus, Odysseus’s second in command, who recognizes the moral rot spread by his king’s actions long before the monarch does. It’s Eurylochus who reminds Odysseus that his men need to eat, and questions Odysseus’s decision to shoot another arrow after they escape from the cyclops, and silently judges Odysseus’s pride when he insists on listening to the Sirens’s call. The world’s understanding of right and wrong is crumbling, and Patel’s troubled expressions as he grows more skeptical of his commander serve as the film’s built-in conscience.
