Revision to non-target arthropods and non-target plants risk mitigation and labelling

HSE is updating the risk mitigation options for terrestrial non-target plants (NTP) and non-target arthropods (NTA) to include either a 5m or 10m buffer zone with or without drift reduction technology (DRT).

This will permit a 5m or 10m buffer zone to be specified where required to ensure an acceptable risk to these organisms.

Where evaluated and acceptable within the risk assessment, three-star (75%) DRT will be specified in addition to the 5m or 10m buffer zone. These risk mitigation options are limited to pesticide applications made by horizontal boom sprayer.

New applications received by HSE from 1 September 2026 can present risk assessments for terrestrial NTP and NTA using risk mitigation of a 5m or 10m buffer zone with or without DRT.

The updated guidance is available on HSE's Ecotoxicology webpage.
