Population estimates for England and Wales: mid-2025
On 29 July, we published mid-2025 population estimates for England and Wales, with revisions to the mid-2022, mid-2023 and mid-2024 estimates to reflect improved long-term international migration data.
Alongside the estimates, we have published a suite of supporting information, which you can find links to in our publication list at the end of this newsletter.

Estimates of the very old, including centenarians, England and Wales: 2002 to 2025
On 29 July, we released annual mid-year population estimates for people aged 90 years and over by sex and single year of age up to 105 years and over in England and Wales.
There were an estimated 15,172 centenarians (aged 100 years or over) in 2025, more than a fifth more than in 2015.
Disability data harmonised standards - share your insight
The Government Statistical Service (GSS) Harmonisation team is restarting their review of the disability and impairment data standards and would like to invite individuals with an interest in disability data to get in touch.
Harmonisation is about making statistics and data more comparable, consistent and coherent. It is important that the needs of disabled people with a range of impairments are represented in the next harmonised standard. Last year, the team published two reports outlining their findings from the first phases of their research, which you can read below to find out more about this work.

Changes in employment status and earnings from sepsis
On 29 July, we published the impact of hospitalisation for sepsis on employee earnings and employment status, England: April 2014 to December 2024.
This release looks at the change in employee earnings and employment after hospitalisation for sepsis, compared with 12 to 24 months before hospitalisation.
Health state life expectancy estimates for Middle layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs), England and Wales: 2019 to 2023
Today, we have published estimates of health expectancy for small area populations based on self-assessed health and self-assessed activity limitation.
The release includes estimates of life expectancy, healthy life expectancy (including proportion of life in good health) and disability-free life expectancy, by sex, for Middle-layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs).
The health state information used in the estimates is based on data from Census 2021. This is different to our annual release, which is mainly based on Annual Population Survey data.
Crime in England and Wales: year ending March 2026
On 23 July, we published data on crime against households and people aged 16 years and over, using data from police recorded crime and the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW).
Conceptions in England and Wales: 2023
On 26 June, we released our latest statistics on conceptions in England and Wales. The release combines Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) abortion data with ONS birth data to provide information on conceptions to residents of England and Wales.
The statistics explore variations in conception numbers and rates by age and geography, including trends in teenage conceptions and regional differences. For the first time, we have also published three-year aggregated conception estimates for under-18-year-olds at Middle-layer Super Output Area (MSOA) level, providing a more detailed local area picture.
