Dear readers, So long as you know where you’re going (and where to avoid), Midtown Manhattan is pretty great. Where else could a fuzzy mascot reeking of cigarettes help someone staggering under a 20-pound pan of biryani? Earlier this week my colleagues zeroed in on Midtown’s literary bona fides, and put together a walking tour of some of the neighborhood’s best bookish spots. You’ll find the Drama Book Shop, Japanese emporiums, a legendary comics store I pass more days than not and, of course, suggestions for snacks. It’s quite a bit to cram into a 1.7-mile route, but a great way to spend an afternoon. (I’d be remiss not to encourage more energetic readers to trek up to Argosy Book Store on 59th St. — it’s not part of our official walking tour, since it’s a bit far from the cluster, but it’s magnificent, particularly if you like to drool over first editions and rare tomes.)
