Dear Veteran,
Starting August 10th, 2026, enrolled Veterans can now schedule TeleDermatology Imaging appointments without first contacting their primary care team for a referral.
What is TeleDermatology Imaging?
TeleDermatology Imaging is a way to have photos of your skin concerns professionally taken and reviewed by a VA Dermatologist. It is often used as an initial way to help your care team understand and manage your skin concerns.
How does it work?
- You call one of our local Telehealth Care Technicians to schedule a TeleDermatology appointment.
- You go to your appointment and have photos taken of your skin concern.
- A VA TeleDermatologist reviews your photos.
- Your primary care team will communicate the findings and/or coordinate appropriate next steps.
If your results show anything that needs to be addressed urgently, the TeleDermatologist or designee will communicate the findings and/or coordinate appropriate next steps.
Will my VA Dermatology care change?
No. This change is simply an additional way to access your Dermatology team without unnecessary travel to other clinics miles away, and without any extra steps.
How does TeleDermatology fit into my Dermatology care?
TeleDermatology is one of the ways your care team evaluates skin concerns, similar to how other types of testing or imaging may be used to guide care. You may also continue working with your primary care team, and together your care team will determine the most appropriate next steps.
Will I see a VA Dermatologist after my images are reviewed?
Dermatology care includes both TeleDermatology and in-person visits, with a Dermatologist guiding care in both. A VA Dermatologist will review your images and provide recommendations to your primary care team. In many cases your primary care team will use this guidance to manage your condition. When an in-person Dermatology appointment is the most appropriate next step, such as for procedures, Dermatology will help arrange it.
