Suspect Charged in Cherrydale CarjackingARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Police Department’s Homicide/Robbery Unit is announcing criminal charges have been obtained in a carjacking offense that occurred midday in the Cherrydale neighborhood on July 14, 2026. Tyler Abrahim Afsar, 23, of Hyattsville, MD has been charged with Armed Carjacking, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Robbery, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Grand Larceny Auto. He is currently being held in Washington, D.C. At approximately 12:59 p.m. on July 14, police were dispatched to the 4100 block of 18th Street N. for the report of a robbery. Upon arrival, it was determined the adult female victim was inside her parked vehicle when the male suspect allegedly pulled up in a pickup truck, later determined to be stolen out of Prince George’s County, MD, exited and approached the victim’s driver’s side window. The suspect brandished a firearm and demanded the victim’s vehicle before stealing the contents of her purse. The victim exited and the suspect stole her vehicle and fled the scene. No injuries were reported. A lookout was broadcast and responding officers canvassed the area for the suspect yielding negative results. Later that evening, law enforcement observed the stolen vehicle traveling in Prince George’s County, MD and with the assistance of the Prince George’s County Police Department and United States Park Police, the stolen vehicle was recovered following a pursuit and subsequent vehicle crash in Washington, D.C. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, Mr. Afsar, was taken into custody by the United States Park Police. A firearm was recovered from the vehicle and it was determined the suspect was a convicted felon. During the course of the comprehensive investigation, Arlington detectives obtained evidence linking Mr. Afsar to the July 14 carjacking and obtained warrants for his arrest on August 5, 2026.
