Hello, Scottie families!
We hope you have been having a wonderful summer, with opportunities to relax and spend time with family and friends. We have been gearing up for the start of another great year at Bonnie Brae, and can't wait to see everyone on Friday, August 21, for our Open House and Bonnie Brae Back-to-School BBQ Bash.
Bonnie Brae's renovation continues, and we are excited to share that all classrooms will be located inside the building this year! Work on the blacktop, new playground, fields, and some other interior work will continue throughout the fall and early winter. We will continue to share any renovation related updates and timelines with the Bonnie Brae community as we receive them.
Enjoy these last two weeks of summer. We are looking forward to seeing our Scotties soon! Have a great weekend!

A few amazing highlights that happened this week...
Students enjoyed playing on our playground during our Popsicles on the Playground event.

First Day of School
Monday, August 24, is the first day of school. See the complete school year calendar.FCPS parents, students, and staff members are invited to share their favorite pictures or videos from the first day of school on social media using the hashtag #FirstDayFairfax. Follow FCPS and your school on social media to see photos and videos throughout the school year!

Kindergarten Parent Coffee
We would like to invite kindergarten parents to our “Tears and Cheers” coffee and donut gathering with the administrators, from 8:30-9:00 AM on the first day of school, Monday, August 24. This is a great way to start the year! While there will not be a formal presentation, parents will have an opportunity to meet our administrators and other kindergarten families. We look forward to seeing many of you at 8:30 AM on Monday, August 24 in our Bonnie Brae cafeteria!
Back-to-School Immunization Requirements
Make sure your child has all of their required immunizations before the first day of school. Check their immunization records to see what they might be missing:
- Request immunization records online through the Virginia Immunization Information System (a free service).
- If your child was immunized outside of Virginia, get records from those states’ systems.
- Request records from your healthcare provider. Some may charge for copies.
Review school-required immunizations to verify that your child is up to date.
Re-Enrollment Forms - Please Complete Before Open House
As we prepare for the new school year, we are working toward 100% completion of student re-enrollment forms for every family before school begins. The annual re-enrollment packet includes the Early Release Wednesday childcare selection. This year, we will have a total of 4 Early Release Wednesdays, where we dismiss at 12:15 PM.
Families may complete their forms electronically through ParentVUE, or by downloading the paper forms from the FCPS General Registration Forms webpage and returning them to the school office. All re-enrollment forms must be completed before the start of school.
Please note that teacher assignments will be released only after your child's re-enrollment forms have been completed.
We encourage you to submit your forms before Open House so that you will have access to your child's teacher assignment in advance.
Otherwise, you may complete the required forms at Open House to receive your child’s classroom assignment.
Early Release Wednesdays - Four This Year
Early release Wednesdays provide elementary teachers with a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with their peers. A well-supported and continuously improving teaching staff leads to better educational outcomes for students.
Bonnie Brae's early release Wednesdays (dismissal is at 12:15 PM) for 2026-27:
- October 21
- December 2
- February 10
- May 5

Student Rights and Responsibilities Updates
Understanding Student Rights and Responsibilities Updates: New Universal Grade Matrices for Families
Families are encouraged to review the updated FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document, which explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses in order to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.
Updates for the 2026-27 school year include new Universal Grade Matrices (UGMs). UGMs are charts that show behavior expectations and school responses by grade level (K-3, 4-8, and 9-12). These at-a-glance resources (in Appendix D of the SR&R) are designed to make it easier for parents and caregivers to understand how schools respond to different types of behavior concerns.

New Requirement for Student Device Use During the School Day
Starting this school year, students must use FCPS-issued devices for school-related digital activities during the instructional day. This is in accordance with a new School Board requirement, approved on July 16, which states that students may not use personal electronic communication or computing devices, including personal laptops, tablets, smartwatches, smartphones, and similar devices.
Students may only use their personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device.
Families can help support this requirement by reminding students to bring their FCPS-issued device each day and use it for all school-related digital activities unless an approved exception applies. Please stay tuned for more information.
Kiss and Ride Sign Up
As we welcome students back to Bonnie Brae ES, we want to ensure the safe arrival and departure of each child. Bonnie Brae ES has an established area called the Kiss & Ride (at our side parking lot), which is designed as a safe place for adults in private vehicles to load and unload children. With the cooperation of all drivers, we will be able to provide an efficient and safe transfer of children.
If you are interested in using Kiss and Ride to drop off or pick up your child, please complete the Kiss and Ride form. Returning and new Kiss and Riders will receive new tags prior to students returning.
Arriving at Bonnie Brae
All Bonnie Brae visitors will press the bell located to the left of Door 1, and will then enter the main office through the door immediately on the left upon entry into the vestibule.
Bonnie Brae Student Arrival and Dismissal
- Door 1
- Walkers, bike/scooter riders, and bus riders will enter and exit through Door 1, the main entrance.
- Door 4
- PAC students will enter and exit through Door 4.
- Door 5
- Kiss and Ride students will enter and exit through Door 5.
- Door 8
- Back gate walkers will enter and exit through Door 8.
New Student ID Cards Coming for Bus Riders This Fall
As part of the ongoing commitment to strengthening layered safety and security programs, FCPS will implement a new student ID system for students who ride our school buses.
The implementation of the student IDs is designed as an additional safety measure for our 130,000 FCPS students who ride the bus each day, ensuring they are on the right bus and that they get on and off at the correct bus stop, as well as making sure only authorized students are on our buses.
The IDs will be provided to students who ride the bus. Those students will be expected to tap on and tap off the bus. The student IDs do not track student movement. The only information available is when a student taps on or off a bus. Much like our Here Comes the Bus app, our new app will allow parents/guardians to track the progress of the school bus.
It is possible that the ID program will expand in the future to include uses such as library cards and meal payment. Learn more about the new transportation system and student ID cards.
