Investigation Underway After Medical Emergency at Detention FacilityARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) and Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) are providing information regarding the death of Tyrone Hines, 62, who died at Virginia Hospital Center on August 10 after experiencing an apparent medical emergency while in custody at the Arlington County Detention Facility. At approximately 7:49 a.m., a deputy sheriff was alerted by an emergency call button activation located inside Mr. Hines’ cell. The deputy observed Mr. Hines experiencing an apparent medical emergency and immediately notified detention facility medical staff who responded and began providing emergency medical care and lifesaving measures. Arlington County Fire Department was notified and continued emergency medical care upon arrival. Mr. Hines was transported to Virginia Hospital Center, where lifesaving efforts continued. He was subsequently pronounced deceased in the hospital’s emergency department. Mr. Hines was booked into the Arlington County Detention Facility on July 20, 2025, and was being held on an attempted robbery charge. His family has been notified of his passing. ACSO and ACPD extend their condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. ACPD is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Hines’ death, with the full cooperation of ACSO. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. ACSO will conduct a separate administrative investigation and mortality review of the incident.
