Hey there,

There's a night early in our marriage we don't usually talk about.

Axell came home late. The dishes were piled up. Kathy asked, without much left in her voice, if he even noticed them anymore. He said something about being tired. She said something about always being the one who noticed. Within five minutes we weren't talking about dishes. We were talking about everything.

That fight had nothing to do with dishes. It was about the hundred small moments before it. A "how was your day" that got a one-word answer. A hand reached for that didn't get reached back. Small bids for connection, missed one after another, until neither of us felt like we were on the same team.

We didn't know it then, but what was happening had a name: the emotional bank account. Every time you show up for your partner, even in some small way, you're making a deposit. Every time you brush past them or get defensive instead, you're making a withdrawal.

Enough withdrawals, and even a good relationship starts to feel like two roommates splitting rent.

What brought us back wasn't a grand gesture. It was a ten-minute check-in once a week where we each answered two questions: what's one thing you did this week that made me feel loved, and one thing that missed the mark. No defending. No fixing. Just listening.

That check-in is one of the tools inside Building Lasting Love, the guide we built from what actually worked for us, not the advice that sounds nice on paper and falls apart the first time you're both tired and irritated. It covers the emotional bank account framework, the patterns that quietly wreck relationships before you notice them starting, and the exact check-in ritual we still use.

If any part of that night sounds familiar, we hope this helps the way it helped us.
