Mary Carr, MD, Chief of Surgery at Truman VA

Dr. Carr Named Chief of Surgery

Mary Carr, MD, FACS, has been named Truman VA's new Chief of Surgery. Dr. Carr is a board-certified General Surgeon and Surgical Critical Care Specialist with extensive leadership experience within the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Throughout her tenure at Truman VA, Dr. Carr has held several key leadership positions, to include Deputy Chief of Surgery, Section Chief of General Surgery, and Interim Deputy Chief of Staff. Most recently, Dr. Carr served as the facility’s Acting Chief of Surgery. As a leader, she has led major clinical operations, spearheaded quality improvement initiatives, and expanded Truman VA’s already robust surgical service offerings.
A graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Carr earned her medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine before completing her General Surgery residency at the University of Colorado Hospital. She went on to complete a Surgical Critical Care fellowship at the University of Missouri and received additional training as a Visiting Fellow in Transplant Surgery at the University of New South Wales. In addition to her board-certifications, Dr. Carr also received certification for the da Vinci Surgical System, an advanced robot-assisted platform for minimally invasive procedures.
With her exceptional clinical and surgical background, proven leadership within the VA, and commitment to high-quality surgical care, Dr. Carr will continue to elevate Truman VA’s Surgery Service while advancing excellence for the Veterans we proudly serve.

Truman VA will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, in the Auditorium, Room D213. Please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter VAColumbia to schedule an appointment.

National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic PNG

Winter Sports Clinic for Disabled Veterans

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic will be held from March 27 to April 3, 2027, in Snow Mass, Colorado. Applications will be accepted until Nov. 30, 2026. Veterans with TBIs, spinal cord injuries, visual impairments, amputations, and other severe disabilities are eligible. Emergency Outdoor Preparedness

Our thanks to Adam Doerhoff, Missouri Department of Conservation, for presenting "Emergency Outdoor Preparedness" on July 29. During the one-hour class, Veterans and caregivers were provided information about outdoor safety and survival, should an emergent situation unfold. Safety tips included making sure loved ones know where you are going and how long you plan to be there, how to identify poison ivy and wildlife that may bite or sting, and misconceptions about surviving outdoors. Survival information included how to locate and purify water to drink, how to make shelters or utilize existing or natural structures, and the dangers and warning signs of hypothermia.
