Afternoon Briefing

Thursday, August 20, 2026

Good afternoon, Chicago.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is recommending that two Grand Crossing (3rd) District police officers be stripped of their police powers after finding that they drew blood from a man while trying to pry open his mouth with a pair of wooden tongue depressors, recently released records show.

According to a July 29 memo from COPA Chief Administrator LaKenya White to interim Superintendent Fred Waller obtained in a Freedom of Information request, Sgt. Steven Holden and Officer Sonja Brown were strip-searching a man at the 3rd District station when Brown said she saw the man put what is only described in the memo as “contraband” in his mouth.

Here’s what else is happening today. And remember, for the latest breaking news in Chicago, visit chicagotribune.com/latest-headlines and sign up to get our alerts on all your devices.
