Dear Travel Fan, The countdown to Labor Day has begun! We’re here to help with some advice from our Frugal Traveler on how to save on last minute bookings — and her tips are useful beyond summer’s end as well. If you’re looking for some inspiration, we can help there, too:
This week, the transition of Florida’s Palm Beach International airport to Donald J. Trump was finished, complete with a rare change in the airport code — from PBI to DJT. Our airline reporter, Christine Chung, flew down to take in the scene and explain what went into the change. And if you fly American and like to watch movies on a screen bigger than your phone, good news: The airline is bringing back seat-back entertainment systems on many flights. Our Tripped Up columnist helps out a traveler who was charged a cleaning fee by Lyft after his driver claimed he’d thrown up in the back of the car. He hadn’t, and we got him his money back. (Did you know false claims like this are a thing?) And we also explain what’s going on with cruise fees and gratuities, some of which have suddenly been hiked. Finally, Nyepi, the annual day of silence on the Indonesian island of Bali, requires locals and tourists alike to remain in their homes or hotels and minimize noise, and they are urged to perform quiet meditation. A Swiss visitor violated those rules, and he was recently sentenced to a year in jail. Wishing you safe and happy travels,
