Last night Jaye surprised me with an early birthday gift.
Blindfolded me.
Chucked me in the car. Drove around in circles in the Walmart parking lot. Then 45 minutes on the highway.
When I took the blindfold off I could barely open my eyes.
(if you saw my IG story, I was dying lol)
No idea where we were. Or that my fam is staying nearby. We're all together now.
It felt about as disorienting as my 3rd year of being in the gym.
I had just lost a bunch of weight.
But then I was kinda skinny, and also kinda soft.
The goal physique I thought I should have by then was nowhere in sight.
Visible abs. Meaty shoulders and arms. The v-taper.
My body looked disproportionate. Twiggy arms with a chunky midsection.
For some reason, it just wasn't working.
Should I bulk?
Should I do a cut?
Am I doing too many sets? Not enough?
Constantly second guessing myself.
At that point it wasn't about bodybuilding or anything like that. I just wanted to be lean, confident, and fill out my shirts.
It sucked to be always worrying about food and macros. Especially since I didn't have the results to show for it.
Everyone told me something different.
Bulk. Cut. More sets. Fewer sets. Eat more protein. Eat less.
Sometimes that's the advice you need to hear.
But most of the time the problem isn't which specific piece of your program changes.
It's that you're blindfolded with no idea where you're going.
Running the program. Tracking the macros. Driving in circles, with no idea what any of it was building toward.
Most guys just cycle back and forth.
-
Bulk for a while, get soft, panic, cut
-
Cut for a while, get small, panic, bulk
-
Repeat until you convince yourself it doesn't work for you
I hear it on calls with guys every week. Smart guys. Guys who have read everything, track everything, second-guess everything, and still look the same as they did 18 months ago.
Not because they're lazy. Because they never commit to a destination. And they just kept changing things when they got frustrated.
You're probably not doing anything horribly wrong.
You're just blindfolded and in circles, hoping you end up somewhere good.
