MIT's latest report calls for a major overhaul of assessment methods in response to generative AI's growing capabilities. The institute urges a move away from traditional finished-product assessments--such as essays or projects--that can be easily generated by AI. Instead, MIT recommends richer evidence of learning, including portfolios, oral defenses, performance tasks and experiences that reveal college students' independent thinking and skills. These recommendations align with trends at other leading universities, reflecting a consensus that higher education must rebuild how it measures student competence in the AI era.

Numerous faculty members at Texas A&M University-Victoria have resigned following the university's announcement this summer that full-time faculty must be physically present on campus for eight hours each weekday. Reports have indicated that as many as half of the university's full-time faculty--including the entire counselor education department--have quit. The departures are attributed to the policy's impact on those with long commutes and caregiving responsibilities.
