First Week of School: A Success!

Dear Lees Corner Families,

It has been incredible to welcome our students back to school! Our classrooms are filled with energy, smiles, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. Seeing students reconnect with friends, build relationships with their new teachers, and settle into daily routines has made for a wonderful start.

Our staff worked hard all summer to prepare safe, welcoming learning spaces, and we are so proud of how well our students have adjusted. Thank you to all our families for your strong partnership with our teachers to support a successful first week of school!

Warmly,

Ms. Sloan & Ms. Hutchinson

CHS BAND

5th & 6th GRADERS!

It’s time to sign up for band!  Band Sign Up Link

Today, Chantilly High School Band students performed for 5th and 6th graders. Ask your child about the instrument demonstrations and encourage them to choose an instrument to play this year.  Band classes meet once per week as part of their specials rotation. Our band teacher, Mrs. Hill is in her 15th year at LCES and is excited to teach your child in band this year!

Join LCES Band or Strings!!!

To learn more about each program, click the links below and please email us with any questions you may have. We look forward to working with your students this year! We encourage ALL eligible students to play an instrument at school as part of their music education. (ALL 5th and 6th grade students can join the chorus regardless of band or strings.)

Odyssey of the Mind

Encourage your child to join Odyssey of the Mind, a fun, creative problem-solving program where students work together to develop and present their own original solution to a long-term challenge. Once sign-ups are complete, I’ll divide students into teams based on age/grade and team size, and each team will create its own meeting schedule that works for their families. Sign up by September 18 so teams have as much time as possible to prepare for the tournament in late February! Sign Up Here

Opt In or Out to Student Devices Being Sent Home for Grades 1-6

New this year, families can opt out of having student laptops sent home with their student.

  • If you do not want your student to bring their FCPS-issued device home, please toggle the Opt Out button to a check mark and confirm by pressing Save Selection.
  • If you would like your student to bring their FCPS device home, no toggle action is needed. Confirm by pressing Save Selection.

Students whose families opt out will continue to have access to an FCPS-issued device during the school day. Please reach out to your student’s teacher to understand expectations for homework and any learning activities that may require access to technology outside of the school day.

Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your child’s bus.

If your child’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at 703-249-7000 with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact the FCPS Office of Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.

SEL Screener Parent/Guardian Notification

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Advanced Academic Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K to 12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.

Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

  • Fall identification: Students in grades 3 to 7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15.
  • Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2 to 7 may be referred by December 15.

FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services:

  • All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT).
  • Students in Grades 3 to 6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
  • Students in Grades 3 to 6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Ms. Lauren Williams, school testing coordinator, at LGWilliams2@fcps.edu by September 30.

Is WhatsApp one of the ways you stay connected with family, friends, and your community? Now you can use it to stay connected with FCPS, too.

Follow the new FCPS WhatsApp Channel for helpful information and reminders throughout the school year, including important announcements, upcoming dates, tips for families, and more.
