BMP Specialist Spotlight

Yetta Williams, Advanced Academics

Yetta Williams Advanced Academics

Hello! I am Ms. Yetta Williams, the Advanced Academic Programs Resource teacher at Bren Mar Park Elementary.

Advanced Academics: GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) & POG/POL (Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning)

This year, we are excited to launch critical and creative thinking in Advanced Academics, with an intentional focus on GLAD and POG/POL. Our goal is to strengthen the social skills that support meaningful learning for all students. Through this work, students will learn how empathy influences the way they think, communicate, collaborate, and respond to others. Students will continuously build upon these skills as they set goals, work toward them, reflect on their progress, and recognize their own growth. We are creating a classroom community where students feel valued, supported and empowered to learn at their level while also understanding why their learning matters to their overall development.

If you have any questions about our Advanced Academic Programs please do not hesitate to contact me at yfwilliams@fcps.edu.

BMP Family Handbook

Bren Mar Park has a handbook available for families to understand important procedures and practices.  It is on our Bren Mar Park website at https://brenmarparkes.fcps.edu/family-resources

Technology Policy Updates

On July 16, 2026, the Fairfax County School Board directed the Superintendent to amend all device regulations, including Regulation 2601, the Students Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R).

During the instructional day, students may not use personal electronic communication or computing devices.  Personal devices include, but are not limited to:

     - Personal laptops

     - Personal tablets

     - Smartphones

     - Smartwatches

     - Other personal electronic communication or devices

The requirement does not apply when a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), or Section 504, outlines device requirements.

Managing Student Screentime

FCPS has introduced new parent controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal to help families manage access on FCPS-issued devices outside of school hours.

Through the Lightspeed Parent Portal, families can now:

  • Set Custom Schedules: Pause or restrict internet access during specific times and days (e.g., bedtime, homework, or family hours).
  • Create Custom Web Rules: Add specific websites to a custom block list to restrict access on their child's device.

For additional details, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.

Students Rights & Responsibilities Updates

The updated Students Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) includes new Universal Grade Matrices outlining behavior expectations and responses for grades K-3 and 4-8.  You can find it at https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/leadership/district-performance-transparency/policies-regulations-notices/student-rights.

The New ParentVue

A new ParentVUE mobile app is available in the Apple and Google app stores. This version provides caregivers with a more secure sign-in. The current “classic” app can be used through this Fall, however families must download the new app by December 2026 to ensure they have continued mobile access to their child’s school data.

In the new app, families can enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) for FCPS Single Sign-On. While enrollment is optional, we strongly recommend that everyone enable this feature.

Learn more about installing the new ParentVUE app. Families needing assistance can submit a Support Request.

Medication Policy & Authorization

Our school health team can administer medication to students as needed, provided we have parental permission.

  • Delivery: An adult must deliver all medication directly to the school health team. Never send medication to school with a child.

  • Authorization: Please complete and submit the proper form to authorize the school to dispense medication to your student.

More information and the forms can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/services/families-and-caregivers/family-academy/school-health-services

FCPS Identification Cards

Every FCPS student will receive an identification card. Bus riders will be expected to tap their cards when boarding and exiting each day.
