Greetings from somewhere in Vermont on the train back to New York!
The first thing I see this morning is that Trump is saying he will “hit Iran hard.” We’ve heard this before, so it’s hard to know what he’ll do (so what’s new). But everything Trump does from now until November is to be viewed in terms of the midterms. Everything he does you can be sure is an effort to mess with the process, or the results, of those elections. Because he knows if the Dems win the House, he will be investigated and impeached to no end. Even more so if they win the Senate as well. His presidency will in essence be finished, and one might hope his freedom as well. So “hitting Iran hard” may be about the midterms.
According to Politico, MAGA is losing patience with this war. In May, half of President Trump’s base thought the war was worth it. Now, just a little more than a third do. According to a new POLITICO Poll, it “reveals how the president’s most die-hard supporters are starting to agree with the majority of Americans who have long opposed the U.S.’ involvement in the war.”
It’s the economy, stupid.
Trump is threatening to report Meet The Press host Kristin Welker to the FCC for reporting that his political endorsments have mixed results. He said, “without question, the strongest Endorsement in the History of Politics. If it were not, I would be the first to admit it.” He continued in a statement, “The Press is a Disgrace to our Nation, and I hope that Chairman Brendan Carr, and the fine people of his Commission, will take this Threat to our Country very seriously.”
NBC stands behind Welker. Here is what she said that annoyed Trump: “He, of course, has endorsed a slate of candidates in the primaries. He’s had some mixed results, but most recently, his pick of Senator Darline Graham, of course, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, was successful in her primary battle, so now she takes on Dr. Annie Andrews in South Carolina.”
Trump tends to go after journalists who are women. Among them New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins and Fox News’ Shannon Bream and CNN Kristen Holmes.
Over the weekend, I attended to represent our team of filmmakers at the Middlebury Film Festival, and I saw another documentary I can recommend. Called Gaslit, it’s about how oil companies are knowingly destroying communities and blatently polute our entire atmosphere with methane gas, going against regulations as they frack and export liquid gas abroad. Jane Fonda is in the film and guides the viewer through the devastated, mostly poor, communities affected in the Louisianna and Texas regions where these companies operate. I knew absolutely nothing about this, so am glad I watched the film. The website has info on where to watch and what we can do to help.
