Why Your Next PCB Quote Might Look Different
We want to keep you informed about market conditions affecting PCB materials industry-wide, and be direct about how they may impact your orders with ASC Sunstone. Since we last wrote to you on this, the picture has changed, and not for the better.
The current situation:
The Iran war and the resulting disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have hit the material supply chain directly. A strike on a major Gulf petrochemical complex knocked out a large share of global production capacity for a high-purity resin used in advanced laminates, and that capacity hasn't come back online. At the same time, AI server and data center demand is pulling copper foil, glass fabric, and laminate capacity away from PCB fabrication generally, and copper itself is trading near record highs.
On top of that, Section 232 tariffs remain in effect on copper and copper-containing products, with the tariff structure having been revised more than once this year. Copper-clad laminate prices are up significantly across most grades, and lead times on specialty and high-performance materials have stretched out considerably, and in some cases by months, not weeks.
This is a broader and more serious version of the pressure we flagged earlier this year. It's affecting the whole industry, not just one supplier or one material category.
What this means for you:
We are actively working to secure and stock high-demand common materials to protect turnaround times, but allocation limits at the supplier level mean this isn't always fully within our control.Material price increases are more likely now than they were a few months ago, and in some cases larger. We will continue to give advance notice before any changes take effect on your orders.Lead time projections, especially on specialty and advanced laminates, may shift more significantly than in the past. We'll communicate impacts on a program-by-program basis as we know them.If your design depends on a specific laminate, thickness, or construction, it's worth a conversation now about whether an alternative material could reduce your exposure.
