Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada—complete with a trollish executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America—is the latest in a long string of actions that have strained the United States’ relations with its allies. There is now significant debate about whether the damage to U.S. partnerships will endure beyond Trump’s second term. I was struck, however, by Kurt Campbell and Rush Doshi’s surprisingly optimistic take on this issue, which we published last month. They point out that the United States’ alliances have weathered serious crises before, and they make a compelling argument that these relationships could emerge from “the Trump shock” even stronger.
