Hi Nie!

This week's Leadership Dispatch is about humility. I'm expecting this one to be a little less popular, but that's why I'm writing it :)

Your ego could prevent you from seeing valuable opportunities, so it's worth constantly checking yourself to make sure you're staying humble enough to accept suggestions that might benefit your project or team.

Leadership Dispatch: Be humble

What's been your favorite principle so far?

All the best

Be humble

A good leader is humble. Not meek, not passive, not indecisive, but humble. This mainly means that you acknowledge you do not know everything and may learn new things as you go. Others may have good suggestions—even better than your plan—which you should consider.

In general, it’s good to continuously incorporate new information as it is available. Much of the time, if you planned well, the new information will confirm or enhance your plan. Occasionally, it will cause you to question your plan. You do not want to be constantly changing course, but you should be open to changing course when appropriate.

Resisting change just to preserve your ego is silly and will ultimately be detrimental to the team.

People on your team will come to you with ideas and critiques. And sometimes you’ll notice things aren’t going as planned, causing you to rethink things.

Your job as a leader is to consider that new information, evaluate it, and act or not act on what you have learned. Don’t let your ego prevent you from acting when you should.
