A Message From Your Administration
Dear Woodley Hills Family,
As we wrap up another wonderful week of learning at Woodley Hills Elementary, we want to remind you that there will be no school on Monday, September 21, in observance of Yom Kippur. We wish a meaningful holiday to all of our families who celebrate, and we hope everyone enjoys a safe, restful long weekend together.
We look forward to welcoming our students back bright and early on Tuesday morning. As a reminder, consistent attendance is so important for our students' growth and success, so if your child has an appointment during the school day, please bring them to school before the appointment or drop them off afterward so they do not miss out on valuable learning. Thank you for your continued partnership and support in making our school community such a warm and special place for our children to thrive.

Social Emotional Spotlight
Families,
As mentioned in our last newsletter, students in grades 3–6 will complete the SEL Screener during their regularly scheduled school counseling lesson between October 5 and October 30.
The screener asks students questions about the following areas:

Supportive Relationships: How supported students feel by their friends, family members, and adults at school.

Self-Management and Responsible Decision-Making: How well students manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations.

Challenging Feelings: How often students experience difficult emotions. Higher scores indicate that students experience these emotions less frequently.
-
Social Awareness and Relationship Skills: How well students consider and understand other people’s perspectives and feelings.
-
Sense of Belonging: How much students feel valued and connected as members of the school community.
-
Emotion Regulation: How well students manage and respond to their emotions.
-
Cultural Awareness and Action (grades 6–12 only): How often students learn about, discuss, and address issues related to race, ethnicity, and culture at school.

Lexia Family Night
Lexia will be hosting 5 virtual family information nights from September-November! You will learn about the Lexia programs, how they are used across FCPS, the benefit of both programs, and have an opportunity to get any Lexia-centric questions around device usage and AI addressed. Parenting can be tough! It’s okay to ask for help. Talk with trained parenting specialists for guidance on a wide range of topics including the stages of child development (0-18 years), reducing parental stress, strengthening the parent-child bond, and accessing community resources.
Family Resource Center - Free Webinars and Events
These free webinars focus on a variety of parenting and school related topics like the school’s special education processes, child development, and executive functioning challenges, to name a few. Recordings are offered in multiple languages.
Parenting Education Classes
These free classes teach positive and effective ways parents can interact with their children at every age and stage of development.

Twice Exceptional Students
Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. Twice-Exceptional (2e) learners are students who are both gifted and have learning challenges or disabilities.
Families can learn more about 2e learners, how to support them, and how to partner with schools on the 2e webpage, which also includes a link to the Special Education Handbook.
New information, including printable flyers, has been added under the heading Supporting 2e Learners in FCPS.

Strategic Plan
Our Focus on Academic Growth and Excellence
The FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.
The third goal is for all students to achieve academic growth and excellence. We want our students to have the academic skills to be successful, including reading on level by third grade. See how Goal 3 is being put into practice.
Attendance
Not Feeling Well? When Your Child Can Come to School
School is better when your child is here! But we do understand that some days, they may feel unwell. Learn more about which symptoms are ok at school (like sneezing or sniffles), and when your child should stay home (if they have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, for example).
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify the school so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school public health nurse. Call the school as soon as you know your child will be absent and, if possible, let them know how long you think they will be out.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students
FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.
Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.
