This week! James A. Garfield Papers webinar

By the People is thrilled to present a very special webinar THIS WEEK on Thursday Sept. 24, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM EDT, "Slumbering Thunder in His Soul: Exploring the Life and Death of James A. Garfield In His Papers," with Garfield Papers curator and Manuscript Division historian, Michelle Krowl.

This webinar will tell the story of the 20th President through his own letters and diaries, as well as those of his wife, Lucretia, and additional context from other Library of Congress collections. Krowl will also discuss how the Garfield Papers came to the Library of Congress and share insights gained through volunteer transcription of the collection. The webinar is open to all, but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Register at this link. A recording of the program will be shared afterward with all registrants.

Brand new Garfield transcription project now available

The next batch of Garfield’s presidential papers is now available for volunteer transcription! This new project, General Correspondence, Vols. 95-108, October-November, 1880, spans the month of his election as President in 1880. His election “opened a floodgate of correspondence from friends and associates, well-wishers from the general public, and those who sought to curry favor with the president-elect.” You can dive into the 10,000 new pages available here.

250 commemorations continue into the fall

We're still commemorating America@250 here at the By the People crowdsourced transcription program! There are over 17,000 pages still in need of both transcribers and reviewers - dive into the American Revolution In Context transcription campaigns to join the celebration.
