The messages were buried deep on Marsha Allen’s cellphone. Authorities in Indiana found them after seizing the device and scouring thousands of texts for evidence that she played a role in a burglary and insurance scam following the 2022 death of her husband, Harold Allen, 52. The messages seemed innocent — one showed a picture of a half-eaten brownie — but authorities came to believe they hinted at possible poisoning plots carried out by Marsha and her daughter, Ashley Jones. The texts suggested that both Harold Allen and Ty Jones, Ashley Jones’ deceased husband, were the targets of those plots, said J.L. McElfresh, a forensic examiner with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. “We all thought maybe they’d done it before,” McElfresh told “Dateline.” |
